What Is a
Childminder?

A childminder is a registered childcare professional who looks after children in a safe home environment while supporting their learning, development and wellbeing.

Childminders work closely with families to provide high-quality childcare. Requirements differ depending on the age group and registration route you follow.

Registration Routes

We help you understand which path applies:

  • Early Years childminding — typically children under 5, where EYFS requirements apply
  • Childcare for Ages 5 - 17 — school-age care with different expectations from early years settings
  • Nanny / home-childcarer registration — caring for children in the family home under the relevant registration rules

Who Can Apply?

You may be suitable if you:

  • Are aged 18 or over
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Are passionate about working with children
  • Can provide a safe and suitable home environment
  • Are willing to complete the required checks and training

It covers core areas of knowledge commonly relevant to childcare practice. The course description will explain the subjects covered, delivery method, assessment and certificate provided.

The individual course price is £79. It is also included in the childcare packages described in this FAQ.

Blended delivery combines online learning with a scheduled face-to-face practical session. Both elements must be completed where required before the learner can successfully complete the course.

No. The practical skills must be demonstrated and assessed in person. Completing only the online element does not amount to completion of the blended course.

Practical sessions take place in London and Coventry. We may also be able to arrange sessions in other locations where at least two other learners are ready to complete their practical training during the same period. If you cannot attend in London or Coventry, please contact Youstar Connect to discuss availability before purchasing the course.

The classroom cancellation, transfer and no-show terms will apply. Contact Youstar Connect as early as possible if you cannot attend. A transfer may depend on notice, availability and any reasonable additional cost.

How long you complete could depend on you. You could complete between 6 weeks to 12 weeks

Yes, online elements are designed for flexible study within the access arrangements supplied at enrolment. Live sessions and practical training must be attended at the agreed time.

Certificates are issued for courses successfully completed in accordance with the relevant assessment and attendance requirements. Payment alone does not guarantee a certificate.

The applicable course rules will explain any resit or reassessment arrangements. A refund is not normally given solely because a learner does not complete or pass an assessment.

No. Registration decisions are made by Ofsted or the relevant external body. Youstar Connect provides training, resources and support but cannot guarantee registration, approval, employment or a particular inspection outcome.

Youstar Connect can provide guidance according to the package purchased. You remain responsible for providing accurate information, completing declarations, submitting your application and meeting all external requirements.

Templates must be reviewed and adapted to your own premises, children, services, routines and risks. You are responsible for ensuring that your final documents are accurate, current and followed in practice.

No, unless the package description expressly states otherwise. Ofsted fees, DBS fees, medical or GP fees, insurance, travel, accommodation and other third-party charges are normally paid separately.

The website and payment page should state the VAT position before you pay. Contact Youstar Connect if the total price is unclear.

Any instalment option will be stated before purchase. If no instalment option is displayed, contact Youstar Connect to ask whether one is available. Access to some elements may depend on the agreed payment schedule.

Cancellation rights depend on what was purchased, when access or delivery began and whether you requested immediate access during the statutory cancellation period. Read the Youstar Connect Cancellation and Refund Policy before purchasing.

A change-of-mind refund may no longer be available after digital access or downloading begins where the required consent and acknowledgement were obtained. Your statutory rights remain unaffected if content is faulty, unavailable or not as described.

You will normally be offered a transfer, an equivalent alternative or a refund for the affected booking, in accordance with the applicable cancellation policy.

Courses, guidance and resources may be updated to keep them accurate or improve delivery. Any material change affecting a confirmed purchase will be explained, and your contractual and statutory rights will remain unaffected.

Contact Youstar Connect before purchasing and explain your intended role, training already completed and the support you need. We can explain the available options, but you should verify any external registration or employment requirement with the relevant organisation.
